im not sure if you knew but you have been on a go kart before in your life! If your remember how much fun these things are i strongly suggest that your relive those memory's and start go karting. Go kart racing is one of the best ways to better yourself as a driver and become a safer one too. Your reflexes will become one with machine and that can make all the diffrence in the world when you may be faced with a dangerous situation on the road.

For those who want to start getting involved in go kart racing there are most likely indoor go karting buisnesses in your area. These buisnesses are full of gear like helmets, suits, gloves that are provided for patrons. Also all of the go karts are build to the same specifacation so all races are based on driver skill. This is a great way for friends to really test each other out and have a great time. Plus many of the go karts in these places can reach speeds of up to 40 miles an hour!

But if your interested in becoming an outdoor racer there are many places local tracks. This is where you will need to have your own gear and also your own go kart. Here is a great starter for a beginer and easy to build so you can learn how a go kart is put together. this will also familiarize you with the parts of a go kart and grow your knowledge.

Race?

depending on your go kart racing frame and you skill level you should choose a class or category in which you feel is best for you. These classes are divided up by the size of your go karts engine.

Racing categories

There are many different classes or formula in karting.

International

The Cik-Fia sanctions international championships in Kf1, Kf2, Kf3, KZ1, KZ2 and Super kart. These are regarded as the top level classes of karting and are also raced in national championships worldwide. The World chapionship (KF1) is decided here. The current 2008 World Champion is Marco Ardigò from Italy.

CIK-FIA categories:

  • KF1 (the top level), KF2, KF3, and KF4 (so-called “basic” category). All are using the same water-cooled no-gearbox 125 cc “long life” two-stroke engines with starter and clutch, each with different technical specifications (mufflers, air boxes, carburetor, rev limit etc...).
  • KZ1 and KZ2, both 125 cc gearbox categories.
  • Superkart, a 250 cc gearbox category.

these categories should give you a basic idea of how the classes in go kart racing work. From here you should be able to choose what class your want to be in.

but you can always go out to your local indoor go karting place and not worry about any of the kart classes because all the karts will be the same.

use protection

when go kart racing always be protected!. As seen in the video bellow accidents are easy and very dangerous and you should always use protective gear. Many indoor karting buisnesses offer helmets, gloves and even race suits. But if your serious about karting then you should consider having your own gear.

HELMETS!

having your own helmet is great to have. being able to customize your own helmet is very cool. You can show your personality through the colors stickers and visors you have. It is also one thing that many people notice, actually the only thing people notice while you fly by them. Motorcycle helmets usually meet the D.O.T standarts for go kart racing.

GLOVES

when racing you got to have a grip on your steering wheel, the only way to keep your hands from danerously slipping off the wheel is with proper race gloves. special ones made from sued and other material allow your hands to grip without fatigue and loss of grip. Gloves are usually very inexpensive and greatly increase you ability to hold your racing kart during corners.

Race suits

these are only for use on outdoor tracks without these most outdoor tracks will not allow you to drive. these are serious and keep you safe from any serious burns from malfuctioning go kart engines. Also any chemical leave on the kart. These are not cheap but their way less expensive than your life! so get suited up

all of these equipment keep your life liveable and safe. have fun safely

Getting started!

I started go karting when i was just around 13 years old. Being as small as i was it made it very easy to handle with my weight. But one down side was that i was not very strong so manouvering the kart was very difficult. Of course i started go kart racing indoors where the tracks were much smaller and less variables on the track like track tempreture, outdoor heat, and track surface. Also indoor karts were all maintained by the track and race helmets and suits were provided by the track.

After a few years of occasional weekend go kart racing i decided to make one of my own and further develop my skills. No way i would start without doing my home work. So i began to read books on go kart racing techniques and how to build my own go kart.

first things first you must start out with a good go kart frame. your fame is what can make a go kart competative or just another go kart. with little funds and not much experience i picked up a cheap go kart to further my skills. later on i saved up and bought my very first racing spec go kart frame.
